Issue 84: April 2011

Shift 2: Unleashed (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Slightly Mad Studios
Publisher: EA
Genre: Racing
7/10
Summary: A quality racing game that unfortunately wasn't blessed by the type of improvements I had hoped for.

Battle: Los Angeles (PS3, X360)
Developer: Live Action Studios
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action / FPS
2/10
Summary: To play this game is kind of like poking a dead crow with a stick. At first you're amazed by the macabre situation, and then you leave it feeling a little disgusted, a little dirty, and very angry.

Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3, X360)
Developer: Omega Force
Publisher: Tecmo Koei
Genre: Action
7/10
Summary: A good ass-kicking game, simply put.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars (3DS)
Developer: Ubisoft Sofia
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Strategy
8/10
Summary: This is currently the best game available for the Nintendo 3DS.

WWE All-Stars (PS3, X360)
Developer: THQ
Publisher: THQ
Genre: Fighting
8/10
Summary: WWE always brag about doing "sports entertainment". Now I finally get what they mean with it.

LEGO Star Wars III (PC, PS3, Wii, X360)
Developer: TT Games
Publisher: Lucasarts
Genre: Action / Platformer
8/10
Summary: I haven't had this much fun with a LEGO game since LEGO Batman three years ago.

Top Spin 4 (PS3, X360)
Developer: 2K Czech
Publisher: 2K Sports
Genre: Sports
8/10
Summary: With all of the boring arcade stuff gone, Top Spin 4 finds the right path and becomes what a tennis simulator should be.

Gray Matter (PC, X360)
Developer: Wizarbox
Publisher: DTP Entertainment
Genre: Adventure
8/10
Summary: A stunning adventure with lovable characters, melancholy music and magical places.

PlayStation Move Heroes (PS3)
Developer: Nihilistic Software
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Party / Platformer
5/10
Summary: No matter what way you look at it, PlayStation Move Heroes never becomes anything more than an anticipation booster for the next "real" platformer game with any of the duos.

The Sims: Medieval (PC)
Developer: Maxis
Publisher: EA
Genre: Simulator / RPG
7/10
Summary: I miss the building part of it and the camera annoys me a bit, but overall this is a funny and likeable game that warms all the way into the chainmail.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 (PC, PS3, Wii, X360)
Developer: EA Sports
Publisher: EA
Genre: Sports
8/10
Summary: You don't have to cheat on the Tiger Woods franchise, this year's annual outing will keep you satisfied from the first to the last hole.

Rush'n Attack: Ex-Patriot (X360)
Developer: Vatra Games
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action / Platformer
2/10
Summary: The talibans show more respect for Buddhism history than Konami does for theirs. This is just sad.

Splinter Cell 3D (3DS)
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Action
5/10
Summary: The Splinter Cell concept demands two analog sticks, and it simply doesn't work any good for the Nintendo 3DS.

Super Monkey Ball 3D (3DS)
Genre: Puzzle / Platformer
4/10
Summary: The biggest disappointment for the 3DS so far.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D (3DS)
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Fighting
8/10
Summary: Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition is very well recommended, even if it's a game that works best without the 3D effect.

Rayman 3D (3DS)
Genre: Platformer
4/10
Summary: Both the Nintendo 3DS and Rayman himself are worth better than this.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D (3DS)
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Sports
7/10
Summary: The best option for portable 3D soccer.

Nintendogs + Cats (3DS)
Genre: Simulator
6/10
Summary: More of a Nintendogs upgrade with 3D than a new game.

Pilotwings Resort (3DS)
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Adventure / Sports
7/10
Summary: It lacks content, but it's compensated by the sheer joy of gaming that only Nintendo comprehends.

Ridge Racer 3D (3DS)
Genre: Racing
8/10
Summary: Ridge Racer was the perfect launch title for the PlayStation back in the day, and it's still just as good for the 3DS, 16 years later.

LEGO Star Wars III (3DS)
Publisher: Lucasarts
Genre: Platformer
7/10
Summary: Only terrible checkpoints and the lack of co-op stops this from being a must-have for the Nintendo 3DS.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime (PC, PS3, X360)
Genre: Action
3/10
Summary: Sanctum of Slime is a game you should avoid at all cost.

Battlefield Play 4 Free (PC)
Developer: DICE
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / FPS
8/10
Summary: In short, it's an explosive, entertaining action party to enjoy. Completely free of charge.

Issue 83: March 2011

Homefront (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Kaos Studios / Digital Extremes
Publisher: THQ
Genre: Action / FPS
6/10
Summary: Pretty average in the end. The story is lacking in several aspects and it's over before it has barely started. The graphics feel old and the sound is unevenly mixed. The multiplayer component saves it from a lower score.

Pokémon Black (DS)
Developer: Game Freak
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: RPG / Adventure
8/10
Summary: Pokémon Black could have been the best game in the franchise ever, but it's still the obvious choice for all new Pokémon hunters and an absolute must for all fans.

Crysis 2 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Crytek
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / FPS
9/10
Summary: It would be unfair to not name this as this year's most epic action game so far. Crytek has done it again.

Bulletstorm (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Epic / People Can Fly
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / FPS
8/10
Summary: Everything does not have to be super serious. Sometimes a well-pinned kick and some mutated cactuses are enough.

Killzone 3 (PS3)
Developer: Guerrilla Games
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Action / FPS
7/10
Summary: The multiplayer classes are a little too unbalanced, the support for stereoscopic 3D is mediocre and the campaign lasts for only five hours. This only makes Guerrilla's third a very strong seven.

Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)
Developer: Good-Feel / Hal Laboratory
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
8/10
Summary: You're not gonna stop playing until the final boss has bitten the textile dust.

Yakuza 4 (PS3)
Developer: SEGA
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Action / Adventure
7/10
Summary: In the wait for Shenmue 3, the Yakuza games continue to be good substitutes.

MotorStorm: Apocalypse (PS3)
Developer: Evolution Studios
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Racing
5/10
Summary: Some good online support could have lifted Apocalypse, because just as its predecessor it doesn't have enough depth to bring joy in the long haul.

Dragon Age II (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: BioWare
Publisher: EA
Genre: RPG
9/10
Summary: Lots of stuff to do on the side of the main story, gorgeous design and almost endless replayability. BioWare has done it again.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Eden Games
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Genre: Racing
6/10
Summary: The game's level system tries to lure me out on the country roads, but in the end the landscape consists mostly of pointless missions. An average game overall.

Fight Night Champion (PS3, X360)
Developer: EA Sports
Publisher: EA
Genre: Sports / Fighting
8/10
Summary: Good-looking graphics and a stunning sports game.

Moto GP 10/11 (PS3, X360)
Genre: Racing
8/10
Summary: It feels like a true simulator, more so than its predecessors. Apart from old graphics, this is the best motorcycle racing game in many, many years.

Knights Contract (PS3, X360)
Genre: Action
2/10
Summary: It's an action game in the same spirit as Ninja Gaiden, but with controls, graphics, artificial intelligence and overall design that induces vomiting.
