Summary: This is, very much, an adventure you cannot afford to miss.

DiRT 3 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Codemasters
Publisher: Codemasters
Genre: Racing
8/10
Summary: Gymkhana is the best part, the snow sucks, and the traditional rally stages are back.

Virtua Tennis 4 (PC, PS3, Wii, X360)
Developer: SEGA
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Sports
5/10
Summary: I really don't know why SEGA has failed to deliver on one of their old beloved franchises, but with Top Spin 4 in stores, there is no reason to pout.

Brink (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Splash Damage
Publisher: Bethesda
Genre: Action / FPS
7/10
Summary: Brink is a decent action game with some really good ideas, but I was hoping for more.

Mortal Kombat (PS3, X360)
Developer: NetherRealm Studios
Publisher: Warner
Genre: Fighting
7/10
Summary: Mortal Kombat is not the best, most advanced, balanced, or best-looking fighting game out there. But it is rich of content, fun, polished, and as vulgarly American as the series always has been. It is, after all, very fun to cut someone's arms off.

Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (PSP)
Developer: Square Enix
Publisher: Square Enix
Genre: RPG
8/10
Summary: Final Fantasy IV for PSP is simply the best PSP game of the year so far, even though the competition isn't as stiff as it could be.

Portal 2 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Valve
Publisher: EA
Genre: Puzzle / Adventure / FPS
9/10
Summary: Valve has a reason to celebrate with a piece of cake, and you have all the reasons to get this game.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (Multi)
Developer: TT Games
Publisher: Disney
Genre: Platformer
7/10
Summary: Jack Sparrow fits perfectly in a LEGO format, and the levels are colorful and charming. Some odd puzzles and technical hitches makes the score a firm seven, though.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC)
Developer: CD Projekt Red Studio
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Genre: RPG
9/10
Summary: The Witcher 2 is a fistfight with an executioner in the rain, to be running from elven terrorists and to be ripping off the face of a succubus. It's also one of the best games of this year.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - Escalation (X360)
Genre: Action
8/10

Outland (X360)
Genre: Platformer
8/10

måndag 25 april 2011

Issue 84: April 2011

Shift 2: Unleashed (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Slightly Mad Studios
Publisher: EA
Genre: Racing
7/10
Summary: A quality racing game that unfortunately wasn't blessed by the type of improvements I had hoped for.

Battle: Los Angeles (PS3, X360)
Developer: Live Action Studios
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action / FPS
2/10
Summary: To play this game is kind of like poking a dead crow with a stick. At first you're amazed by the macabre situation, and then you leave it feeling a little disgusted, a little dirty, and very angry.

Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3, X360)
Developer: Omega Force
Publisher: Tecmo Koei
Genre: Action
7/10
Summary: A good ass-kicking game, simply put.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars (3DS)

8/10
Summary: This is currently the best game available for the Nintendo 3DS.

WWE All-Stars (PS3, X360)
Developer: THQ

LEGO Star Wars III (PC, PS3, Wii, X360)

8/10
Summary: I haven't had this much fun with a LEGO game since LEGO Batman three years ago.

Top Spin 4 (PS3, X360)
Developer: 2K Czech
Publisher: 2K Sports
Genre: Sports
8/10
Summary: With all of the boring arcade stuff gone, Top Spin 4 finds the right path and becomes what a tennis simulator should be.

Gray Matter (PC, X360)
Developer: Wizarbox
Publisher: DTP Entertainment
Genre: Adventure
8/10
Summary: A stunning adventure with lovable characters, melancholy music and magical places.

PlayStation Move Heroes (PS3)
Developer: Nihilistic Software
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Party / Platformer
5/10
Summary: No matter what way you look at it, PlayStation Move Heroes never becomes anything more than an anticipation booster for the next "real" platformer game with any of the duos.

The Sims: Medieval (PC)
Developer: Maxis
Publisher: EA
Genre: Simulator / RPG
7/10
Summary: I miss the building part of it and the camera annoys me a bit, but overall this is a funny and likeable game that warms all the way into the chainmail.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 (PC, PS3, Wii, X360)
Developer: EA Sports
Publisher: EA
Genre: Sports
8/10
Summary: You don't have to cheat on the Tiger Woods franchise, this year's annual outing will keep you satisfied from the first to the last hole.

Rush'n Attack: Ex-Patriot (X360)
Developer: Vatra Games
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Action / Platformer
2/10
Summary: The talibans show more respect for Buddhism history than Konami does for theirs. This is just sad.

Splinter Cell 3D (3DS)
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Action
5/10
Summary: The Splinter Cell concept demands two analog sticks, and it simply doesn't work any good for the Nintendo 3DS.

Super Monkey Ball 3D (3DS)
Genre: Puzzle / Platformer
4/10
Summary: The biggest disappointment for the 3DS so far.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D (3DS)
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Fighting
8/10
Summary: Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition is very well recommended, even if it's a game that works best without the 3D effect.

Rayman 3D (3DS)
Genre: Platformer
4/10
Summary: Both the Nintendo 3DS and Rayman himself are worth better than this.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D (3DS)
Publisher: Konami
Genre: Sports
7/10
Summary: The best option for portable 3D soccer.

Nintendogs + Cats (3DS)
Genre: Simulator
6/10
Summary: More of a Nintendogs upgrade with 3D than a new game.

Pilotwings Resort (3DS)
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Adventure / Sports
7/10
Summary: It lacks content, but it's compensated by the sheer joy of gaming that only Nintendo comprehends.

Ridge Racer 3D (3DS)
Genre: Racing
8/10
Summary: Ridge Racer was the perfect launch title for the PlayStation back in the day, and it's still just as good for the 3DS, 16 years later.

LEGO Star Wars III (3DS)
Publisher: Lucasarts
Genre: Platformer
7/10
Summary: Only terrible checkpoints and the lack of co-op stops this from being a must-have for the Nintendo 3DS.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime (PC, PS3, X360)
Genre: Action
3/10
Summary: Sanctum of Slime is a game you should avoid at all cost.

Battlefield Play 4 Free (PC)
Developer: DICE
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / FPS
8/10
Summary: In short, it's an explosive, entertaining action party to enjoy. Completely free of charge.

fredag 22 april 2011

Issue 83: March 2011

Homefront (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Kaos Studios / Digital Extremes
Publisher: THQ
Genre: Action / FPS
6/10
Summary: Pretty average in the end. The story is lacking in several aspects and it's over before it has barely started. The graphics feel old and the sound is unevenly mixed. The multiplayer component saves it from a lower score.

Pokémon Black (DS)
Developer: Game Freak
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: RPG / Adventure
8/10
Summary: Pokémon Black could have been the best game in the franchise ever, but it's still the obvious choice for all new Pokémon hunters and an absolute must for all fans.

Crysis 2 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Crytek
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / FPS
9/10
Summary: It would be unfair to not name this as this year's most epic action game so far. Crytek has done it again.

Bulletstorm (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Epic / People Can Fly
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / FPS
8/10
Summary: Everything does not have to be super serious. Sometimes a well-pinned kick and some mutated cactuses are enough.

Killzone 3 (PS3)
Developer: Guerrilla Games
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Action / FPS
7/10
Summary: The multiplayer classes are a little too unbalanced, the support for stereoscopic 3D is mediocre and the campaign lasts for only five hours. This only makes Guerrilla's third a very strong seven.

Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)
Developer: Good-Feel / Hal Laboratory
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
8/10
Summary: You're not gonna stop playing until the final boss has bitten the textile dust.

Yakuza 4 (PS3)
Developer: SEGA
Publisher: SEGA
Genre: Action / Adventure
7/10
Summary: In the wait for Shenmue 3, the Yakuza games continue to be good substitutes.

MotorStorm: Apocalypse (PS3)
Developer: Evolution Studios
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Racing
5/10
Summary: Some good online support could have lifted Apocalypse, because just as its predecessor it doesn't have enough depth to bring joy in the long haul.

Dragon Age II (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: BioWare
Publisher: EA
Genre: RPG
9/10
Summary: Lots of stuff to do on the side of the main story, gorgeous design and almost endless replayability. BioWare has done it again.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Eden Games
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Genre: Racing
6/10
Summary: The game's level system tries to lure me out on the country roads, but in the end the landscape consists mostly of pointless missions. An average game overall.

Fight Night Champion (PS3, X360)
Developer: EA Sports
Publisher: EA
Genre: Sports / Fighting
8/10
Summary: Good-looking graphics and a stunning sports game.

Moto GP 10/11 (PS3, X360)
Genre: Racing
8/10
Summary: It feels like a true simulator, more so than its predecessors. Apart from old graphics, this is the best motorcycle racing game in many, many years.

Knights Contract (PS3, X360)
Genre: Action
2/10
Summary: It's an action game in the same spirit as Ninja Gaiden, but with controls, graphics, artificial intelligence and overall design that induces vomiting.

torsdag 10 februari 2011

Issue 82: February 2011

Dead Space 2 (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Visceral Games
Publisher: EA
Genre: Action / Horror
9/10
Summary: Masterful horror game with fantastically skilled tempo changes, stunning graphics and really well-done controls.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds (PS3, X360)
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Fighting
8/10
Summary: Marvel vs Capcom 3 has its flaws, but compensates for it with sheer joy and it can be warmly recommended for everyone who liked the previous games in the series. It's fast, violent, intense and very entertaining.

LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3)
Developer: Media Molecule
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Platformer and beyond
9/10
Summary: The new tools in Media Molecule's anticipated sequel gives your inner game developer an absurd amount of possibilities and no game on the market teases with more creativity. Add to this really worked-through levels in the campaign mode and you have a fantastically good start of the gaming year of 2011. It will now be extremely exciting to see what the fans will manage to build during the coming months.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 (PS3, X360)
Developer: Fatshark
Publisher: Capcom
Genre: Action / Platformer
7/10
Summary: Despite co-op, sweet music and an orange mustache, Fatshark's latest does not quite live up to the same standard as the original, even though Rearmed 2 is still totally worth buying.

DC Universe Online (PC, PS3)
Developer: Sony Online Entertainment
Publisher: Sony
Genre: MMORPG / Action
7/10
Summary: An atmospheric online role-playing game in DC's colorful universe with a cool theme and a satisfying battle system, but it suffers a bit from a repetitive mission structure. If you're tired of World of Warcraft, DC Universe Online is definitely worth trying out.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem (DS)
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
8/10
Summary: Nintendo manages to squeeze out maximum joy from a classic setup. And since the homemade level-building has barely started yet, we most likely have the best experiences ahead of us.

Nail'd (PS3, X360)
Developer: Techland
Publisher: Deep Silver
Genre: Racing
5/10
Summary: Hysterically fast arcade racing on some of the most insane tracks ever created. But it quickly gets hugely repetitive.

9/10

Hydroventure (Wii)
Genre: Puzzle / Action

lördag 18 december 2010

Issue 81: December 2010

Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)
Developer: Polyphony Digital
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Racing
7/10
Summary: Among boring modes, slow and repetitively structured career mode, uneven graphics and insane presentation I find improved and dynamic car physics, a definitely good enough online mode and gorgeous Premium-cars. But it's not enough to beat Forza Motorsport 3.

Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
Developer: Retro Studios
Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
8/10
Summary: Apart from some smaller control problems, Kong's return is a solid production that generates constant smiles when I play. The fans should all scream like monkeys of delight.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm (PC)
Developer: Blizzard
Publisher: Blizzard
Genre: MMORPG
9/10
Summary: Cataclysm is both a remake of the game we all have played for so long, where most of the improvements are made for the better, and an even bigger piece of brilliant online role-playing game.

Blood Drive (PS3, X360)
Developer: Sidhe
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Action / Racing
4/10
Summary: No amount of zombies in the world can hide the fact that Blood Drive is unfinished, not thought through at all and very boring. Now the wait for Twisted Metal is even harder.

Splatterhouse (PS3, X360)
Developer: Namco
Publisher: Namco
Genre: Action
4/10
Summary: Splatterhouse is both a fun concept and has a sweet attitude, but it's not especially fun for longer periods of time and all the blood in the world can't make me forgive the uneven difficulty, the slow controls and the terrible checkpoints that make me replay long parts of the game.

Apache: Air Assault (PS3, X360)
Developer: Gaijin
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Flight / Action
7/10
Summary: Anonymous helicopter action that manages to include the most important; sweet choppers, cool battles and well done missions.

Epic Mickey (Wii)
Developer: Junction Point
Publisher: Disney
Genre: Platformer / Action
8/10
Summary: Fun platforming and most of all a stunningly surrealistic setup make Epic Mickey a designer's dream. This is one of the best platformers of the year.

Developer: Treyarch
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Shooter / Action

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Criterion
Publisher: EA
Genre: Racing
8/10
Summary: Hot Pursuit gives you a big dose of accessible arcade racing for the one who wants to torment luxury rides in beautiful country resorts. The career mode is barely good enough, but the game completely shines through online with its addictive missions, perfect setup and well-done social functions. Sure, this feels more like Burnout than Need for Speed, but I only see that as something positive.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Ubisoft
Publisher: Ubisoft
Genre: Action
8/10
Summary: Some smaller bugs and Ezio's terrible accent can't change the fact that Brotherhood is a big-scale adventure stuffed with good action and stunning acrobatics. The online mode is a really successful newcomer too.

Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom (PS3, X360)
Developer: Game Republic
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Genre: Action / Adventure
7/10
Summary: Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is a cousy action adventure that covers a pretty big genre hole for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Now we're hoping for a sequel with a little faster pacing and even more difficult cooperation puzzles.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Lucasarts
Publisher: Lucasarts
Genre: Action
5/10

Rock Band 3 (PS3, Wii, X360)
Developer: Harmonix
Publisher: MTV Games
Genre: Music / Rhythm
10/10
Summary: The level of ambition and the entertainment value speaks clearly; Rock Band 3 is genre perfection. No matter if you're singing three-vocal harmonies or banging drums on the Easy-level, Harmonix's game shines from brilliance.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP)
Developer: Ready at Dawn
Publisher: Sony
Genre: Action
8/10

8/10
Summary: Original, comedic, atmospheric and incredibly charming. Fable III will not disappoint any role-playing fans.

GoldenEye 007 (Wii)
Developer: Eurocom
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Shooter / Action
6/10
Summary: Even if the developers have peeked more than a little at Rare's old game and include several homages to the original, GoldenEye 007 for the Wii is never more than a bleak copycat.

Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: Bethesda
Genre: RPG
8/10
Summary: Fallout: New Vegas is a spinoff that stands on its own legs thanks to some brilliant news gameplay-wise and a really good story. If it weren't for all the small, technical hitches I would've gladly given it a nine.

Medal of Honor (PC, PS3, X360)
Developer: Danger Close Games
Publisher: EA
Genre: Shooter
7/10
Summary: Gruesome military porno, stunning graphics and remarkable sound saves Medal of Honor from a lower grade. Pale multiplayer mode and short gameplay time keeps it from getting a higher one.

Vanquish (PS3, X360)
Developer: Platinum Games
Publisher: Sega
Genre: Action/Shooter
8/10
Summary: Vanquish is, without exaggeration, the most action stuffed game I have ever played in my entire life. It's also well balanced, nice looking, varied and extremely addictive.

NBA 2K11 (Multi)
Developer: Visual Concepts
Publisher: 2K Games
Genre: Sports

Developer: Milestone
Publisher: Black Bean Games
Genre: Racing
5/10
Summary: I was really, really hoping for great things - even if my gut feeling beforehand was telling me something else. Unfortunately Milestone does not manage to create a believable sense of speed. They also don't succeed with the track layouts, and the default settings are downright stupid.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock (PS3, Wii, X360)
Developer: Neversoft
Publisher: Activision
Genre: Music/Rhythm
8/10
Summary: A rocking music game and a worthy finish for Neversoft. What's lacking in ambitions and new thinking is compensated with a great setlist and a playful career mode.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (PS3, X360)
Developer: Ninja Theory
